Metro-land: the birth of Amersham-on-the-Hill

 

Amersham Museum’s pop-up exhibition will open in Amersham-on-the-Hill in May. The exhibition,  supported by an All Our Stories grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, explores the story of the railway coming to Amersham and the subsequent development of Amersham-on-the-Hill. The project ties in with the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Metropolitan Railway.

 

The exhibition runs from Tuesday 14th May – Saturday 1st June, open every day 10am-4pm (except 19th and 20th May).

 

 

A large selection of historic photographs will be featured together with audio and film clips and a fascinating collection of objects. There will be a range of model Metropolitan locomotives and other vehicles on display and a large model of Amersham Station, designed to show what the station would have looked like in the 1950s. Visitors can listen to people’s memories about travelling on the
railway in the past and find out how the town’s shops, housing and entertainment have changed over time.

 

Visitors can also find out about the Metro-land housing developments in Amersham and look at some of the iconic posters and booklets which were produced to promote them. There are also historic maps and plans of houses and associated sale particulars.

 

The winning entries in the museum’s annual art and literacy competition for children will be displayed in the exhibition. This year’s Jean Archer Award encourages children to think about the railway or the design and history of their home. The closing date for entries is Friday 26th April.

 

There are lots of hands-on things to do in the exhibition. Visitors can sit back and relax in our 1930s room and take an opportunity to browse through books and photos or play with our Metro-land doll’s house. There is a train set to play with, building bricks and craft activities on offer throughout the time that the exhibition is open.

 

 

There is an exciting programme of activities to complement the exhibition. Guided walks of Amershamon-the-Hill will be offered throughout the time the exhibition is open. Over the half-term week there are some fantastic events, including a Create! craft session on Wednesday 29th May. Over the bank holiday weekend (25th/26th/27th) steam heritage trains will be running between Amersham and Harrow (see www.ltmuseum.co.uk for details) and in the exhibition there will be a model Metropolitan railway display.

 

May offers a full programme of activities in the museum including a ‘Research Your Home’s History’ day on Friday 17th May.

 

A change of hands, after many years, with the retirement of Ashwin and Sheila Patel.

 

The new owners (who have seamlessly assumed newspaper deliveries) have said they plan to renovate the building and introduce a small French-style cafe setup, so you can buy your paper and have a quick coffee in a single location.

Anyone know what's behind all the trackside earthworks and tree removal that I can see happening up and down the chiltern line around Cholrleywood, Amersham, .... etc.?

 

Guessing trees cause leaf fall (!) and banks need some re-enforcing ..

The front page of this week's Amersham & LC Examiner says that CDC commissioned a report that has concluded Amersham on the Hill needs a new supermarket, specifically "a 'main foodstore' of 2,500 square metre floor space" and that "Sycamore Road would be a suitable site". 

 

I'm not sure why the council commissioned this report, when there have already been proposals for such a scheme (Sainsbury's to replace Iceland + Chilton&Watson + Cargo). Maybe it's because they want to approve it, but fear it would be unpopular?

 

Some of the comments in support of the report are bizarre. In particular, Councillor Vera Head is quoted as saying "The food in Waitrose and Marks and Spencer is limited. I have had to go to Chesham in the past and get icing sugar and my friend couldn't find mustard here once." Has she actually been in the Amersham Waitrose? It's small, but stocks pretty much everything (albeit not every permutation of size and brand). It certainly sells icing sugar, and it has a wide range of mustards - I double checked today. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anything significant that it doesn't stock. 

 

People needing a bigger supermarket than those already in AotH are likely to be buying more than they can comfortably carry, so will probably drive, in which case, they can continue going to Old Amersham, Chesham, Beaconsfield etc. There isn't scope to add much parking to AotH. 

 

Maybe I'm missing something?

What is people's opinions on the playgrounds for kids/toddlers in the area. Westwood park seems to be the best one in the area but it's not in Amersham

I see we are now going to be charged £35 per year to have our garden waste collected. Isn't that what our council tax is for? I wonder if I can 'opt out' of other areas of council expenditure that are not relavent to me.

Thought I would try here, as you never know who might be reading!

I am in a 2 bed flat in Little Chalfont, it's in a lovely, quiet area of mainly older residents. It has parking, quiet communal gardens, own washing line, and new central heating. I am looking for someone who has a 3 bed house (or even a large 2 bed where a room could be split!) and wants to downsize and swap with me. I love the area I'm in, and the flat, but with two children aged 5 and 13, it would be really nice if they could have their own rooms.

 

I have tried all the normal homeswapper routes, websites etc, but I thought I would try here in case anyone knows of perhaps an older person who wants to downsize but doesn't have access to the internet or even know about swapping!

Our house in London is under offer and we're having real difficulty finding a suitable house to buy in Amersham.

I'm not aware of ever having set any filters and I can't find any way of resetting them.  The help files are no help.
